To have and to hold… dishes

After painting our dining room table, chairs and hutch, I had the itch to paint our corner hutch as well. It was given to us by my parents (Surprise! A hand-me-down) and it was originally light oak. (Sorry about the poor before shot. You get the idea.)

Well, I took your advice and finally painted it white. I’m happy I went with white instead of the black of all the other furniture.

I think I love it.
I don’t think my dad’s heart can take me painting another piece of oak furniture.

It really seems to break his heart. But, I cannot stop. I love painted furniture. And my mom reminded dad and I that they did GIVE it to us. =) haha…. poor dad.

I used oil-based primer and the same white paint that we used on all our trim. Ryan added a few new knobs (from a stash of hand-me-down knobs from Ryan’s parents). I think it really brightens up the corner and looks great with our bright Fiestaware.

What do you think?

(I’m hooking this post up with Kimba’s DIY Day. Check out all the other DIYers out there. But, be careful. It’s addicting.)

On the mind…

I’ve got wainscoting on the mind.
Does this ever happen to you? You decide you want to do something and you just cannot think of anything else?
No?
Okay… it’s just me then.
Anyhow…. I’ve wanted to add some sort of decorative woodwork to the dining room and living room for a while. I think adding some white woodwork on the bottom half of the walls will brighten up the space – especially now that we have a black dining room set. It’s really not quite as dark as it looks in the photos, but there is a lot of dark going on here. I actually really like the wall color, but I think it needs some brightening.
The rooms in question -

The contenders -
1. Simple square panels that mimic our original, wide baseboards.

(Perhaps with a ledge-shelf instead of a flush-mount chair rail)

(I’m not sure where I found these… any ideas?)

2. Beadboard, which may help the rooms seem a little more casual.

3. Or finally – just a simple white chair rail with a lighter, contrasting color above or below.

Do you see why I’m torn? They are all gorgeous…

SO – What do you think? What would be best for the NewlyWoodwards?

Hand-me-down kids

We often joke that everything in our house was a hand-me-down. You may think we’re kidding, but we’re really not.

And, we’re not embarrassed. Just really thankful.
So, I thought it would be humorous to take an inventory of things that were hand-me-downs.

Table and chairs and the lovely grandfather clock were my parents’. My favorite rug of all time was Ryan’s parents’.The pretty corner hutch (that may or may not be painted in the near future) is from my parents.

The hutch was part of the set from my parents.
The Living Room:

The couch, chair, ottoman, run and end table are all from Ryan’s parents. (I know, we are spoiled.)
The TV chest was from my parents… and also made by my dad. The photo is pretty terrible, but it’s a great piece of furniture.
And, here’s a close-up of the lovely end table. It’s adorable.

The Office:
The sofa sleeper and rug were both given to us from Ryan’s parents.
The shelves were also from Ryan’s parents… and so were the wreaths.

And, the pretty little lamp was given to us from Ryan’s aunt
The Kitchen:
Darn… I don’t have a picture of the lovely round rug we received from Ryan’s parents. (You would think they are going rug-less… but they aren’t.)
Upstairs:
This charming mirror is from my parents.
And, the carpet. It’s also a hand-me-down from Ryan’s parents. Haha… not many people can say their carpet is hand-me-down. But, it is dang nice carpeting. We’ve gotten lots of compliments on this carpet. It’s always fun to see people’s reaction when we tell them where it’s from.

The umbrella was from my aunt and uncle, 2 of the chairs were from my grandpa and two were from Ryan’s parents.

So, do you believe us now? I’m sure we’ve missed something… but we have been very blessed to be given so many wonderful things.

What about you? Are you hand-me-down kids?

Dining Room Dilemma

I’m tentatively planning to paint our dining room set this weekend! I’m going back and forth on color.

I am leaning towards black… I’ve always loved black sets.

(image from Rate my Space, pretty much our exact same table)
But, will that be too dark in the room?

But, then my mother in law mentioned white. And, I do love Emily’s white table. But… I don’t want to purchase new chairs yet, and I’m not sure about white chairs.

Is there another color I’m missing?

Here’s the dining room, to refresh your memory. And, now go vote in the sidebar! I need your expertise.
