Nursery beds

March 21, 2012 by Kim Woodward

Another day of nursery progress – today it’s beds. I mentioned that my mom brought home some sheets for the crib, and I kind of love them.

I had originally planned to make crib sheets, but when I saw these cute Harper polka dot crib sheets from Pottery Barn Kids, I knew they’d be perfect. At only $19, it wouldn’t be more than making them myself And it’d mean I’d have to make one less thing for the room. SOLD!

Unfortunately, they were backordered online. So, my mom saved the day and picked me up two sheets. I’m kind of in love with them. They are really a nice coordinate with the curtains. Fun without being overpowering.

I’m thinking of using a navy sheet I have to make a simple pleated crib skirt. Something like this one – using ribbon for the stripe.

In other news … we bought a twin mattress for the nursery and Ryan built a really cool bed frame for it. We were thrilled to find out that the local Salvation Army sells brand-new mattresses from a local factory (it’s actually right down the street). For $100, we came home with a hyper-local mattress that is darn comfortable.

I have plans for it to faux-upholster the frame to make the edges bump-proof. I’ll also add lots of pillows to make it more like a daybed. Since we don’t have another bedroom, this could serve as a guest bed or a nice place for us to relax with the baby. The pugs already approve and have decided it’s their new favorite place to hang.

I’m super excited with how this is coming together. With every piece, we’re one step closer to bringing home baby boy.
What do you think?

Knowing how to troubleshoot will save you time and money.
I recommend starting high and then working low.
STEP 5 – Paint the chair with the color of your choice.

Those polka dots are to die for. Fabulous!

The twin bed will definitely come in handy. I had a couch in Joseph’s nursery before we moved everything and I loved it because Stephen would sit in there with me while I nursed or rocked Joseph. It makes for a cozy space!

Yeah for polka dots! And beds! There is no way that we could have fit a twin mattress in our nursery, but I so wish it was possible as there were many a nights that I slept in the rocker/recliner with a baby in my arms. And by sleep I mean closing my eyes and worrying that I could not sleep because I could drop him.

    Yeah for being a mom:)!

Adding a twin bed to a nursery is the best piece of advice I could give to new parents for a few reasons. 1. There are nights that are hard for baby for whatever reason (teething, sick, etc.) and it’s nice that one parent can “sleep” in baby’s room while the other parents can actually sleep in their own room. 2. There are days when Mom is sick yet still has to watch the baby and you can rest in bed with the door closed while baby/toddler plays in a safe place. 3. I think it makes for easier transitions to big beds as they are used to having the bed in the room anyeay. 4. It’s a great place to cuddle and read books, build forts, etc.

Also, I’m loving everything about your nursery progress!

Ok, so in all fairness I REALLY love PBK to begin with so it shouldn’t be surprising that I love the sheets. My daughter has them in green, or maybe that’s her duvet cover. Regardless, they’re super cute and comfy! I love how it looks with the curtains! And I love the idea for the twin bed frame, can’t wait to see how that turns out! Looking good!

I just love the polka dot bedding. I love simple bedding that’s not all crazy matchy matchy, but just goes well in the room, and that’s certainly what yours is. If you wouldn’t mind, would you email me the location of where you got the twin mattress? I’m in the QC fairly often for work (I’m from Dubuque) and pretty soon I won’t be able to deny that my rapidly growing baby boy needs a real bed, so we’ll be in the market for a twin mattress at that point. srfueger@gmail.com thanks!

Adding the twin bed was such a good idea! And it’s going to look so super cute! I fall more in love with the giant map every time I see it.

The Salvation Army sells new mattresses? Whoa!! We’re about to need a twin-sized one for Coby! I’m so excited about this news. One more reason why I love that we’re in the same area. 🙂

I love that you have room for a daybed – we wanted to do that but ran out of room. Ryan did a great job with the frame, and I can’t wait to see it upholstered! And what a great call on the crib sheets – so cute!

The nursery is looking fantastic! And having a twin bed in there is such a great idea. I spent a few nights sleeping on Forrest’s floor, which is not as comfortable as it sounds. And it doesn’t even sound comfortable. A bed for me in there would have been a good idea.

I LOVE the polkadot sheet!! That crib skirt is going to be great!
It’s a wonderful idea to have a twin bed in the nursery. We had to move the double futon bed out of our nursery because we didn’t have the space and I miss lounging in there.

That sheeting is so perfect, and a blue pleated crib skirt with white stripe would complement it wonderfully! This is so cute already, Kim! And the bed is smart, love the frame Ryan built!

Does Ryan’s genius have no end? Srsly, can you bring him here to whip up a couple of things? Making a bed for the nursh is so smart, I always liked nursing lying down so a bed in there would have been awesome. Plus, it’ll look cute, which trumps all. And the sheet is so cute too, I’m a fan of the polka dot. Yay for your mama!
