Jalapeno pretzels

>> Wednesday, November 30, 2011

If you are looking for a go-to snack for upcoming holiday parties, exchanges and work get-togethers, look no further.

These jalapeno pretzels are super yummy and quite simple. The recipe was given to me by my aunt and every time I make them, people go nuts. I've given the recipe to tons of people and I know it's become a party staple. I didn't take any pictures, but you can imagine a pretzel. That's what it looks like.

Nick's Pretzels
(I have no idea who Nick is.)
(via my Aunt Cathie.)
1 teaspoon dill weed
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon fine black pepper
1 tablespoon of jalapeno seasoning (I get this from Hy-Vee)
2 bottles of Orville Redenbacher popcorn butter
2 packages dry Hidden Valley ranch dressing mix
3 lbs. mini pretzels (almost 3 bags)

Mix popcorn butter, ranch dressing mix and all spices together in a bowl. Mix together well and pour over the pretzels in a large roasting pan (I use a turkey roaster).

Bake at 200 degrees for 1 1/2 hours and stir mixture every twenty minutes to coat with liquid/spice mixture.

(This makes lots, but it keeps for several weeks if in a sealed container.)

They also travel well, and I made a huge batch to take to Tennessee for the holidays.

Happy eating!

Dare to ... eat cookies! (Week 3/6 link-up)

>> Sunday, November 27, 2011

Since many of us (myself included) are recouping from a fabulous Thanksgiving weekend, this is a perfect challenge to ease us back into the holidays (and still give us me time to unpack the 5003 boxes of Christmas decorations around me).

Dare to ... eat cookies!
As we begin to attend holiday parties, share your favorite cookie recipe for all to enjoy. It’s like a digital cookie swap. Share the recipe and a review of the cookie. If you can, add a picture. And don't worry about the extra calories. At Christmas, cookies are calorie-free.

First up - our cookie. I tried something that I found on Pinterest and inspired by our new-found love of cast iron.

The awesome part of this cookie is that you make it all right in the skillet. No dirty pans or bowls. It was also really quick.

The bad part - Ryan and I ate ourselves sick on this cookie. It's so good and super rich. The next day, I came home from work to find my husband gorging himself on the skillet cookie. With chocolate around his mouth, he said, "Don't ever make this again." ;) (I think I'll be making it again. Every guy needs his Kryptonite, right?)

Here's the recipe, with my few modifications.

One-pan chocolate skillet cookie
Modified from recipe at Sophistimom
1 stick unsalted butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 egg
1 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt butter in an 8 inch cast iron skillet set over medium-low heat. Stir in sugars and vanilla and remove from heat. Let rest until pan is warm, but no longer very hot, about 5 minutes.
2. Crack an egg onto the butter and sugar mixture, and use a fork to whisk it well into the mixture. Place flour, baking soda, and salt on top, and very carefully stir into the mixture until smooth and well-mixed. Stir in chocolate chips. Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until starting to turn golden on the top and around the edges, but soft in the center.

Now, to the good part...

What did you DARE to come up with?

A couple of guidelines:
1. Please link to the specific post, not your general blog address.
2. Please stick to the topic for the week. I'll be very flexible, but please try to stick to the weekly theme. I will remove posts that are basically just spamming. You are welcome to link to past posts that fit the theme.
3. Please visit at least one other blog below and comment! This will help us all meet each other. This is really the most important part of this party and what has made it extra unique and fun in the past.

Pennant baby girl quilt

>> Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Way back in July, my friend Katie from The Perks emailed me about the first pennant quilt I made as a gift. She was wondering if I'd make one for her baby, due in January.

Well, to say I was flattered would be the understatement of the century! That she would put trust in me to make something for baby girl made me so proud. And scared to death. I was (and am) so darn scared that she'll realize I'm just a fraud who doesn't know what she's doing. But, I agreed.

Many months later after finding out the little miracle is a girl, here is my most recent pennant quilt.

Katie was about the most flexible momma-to-be. She said she liked my last pennant quilt so I just repeated the same quilt with most of the same fabrics (with a bit of pink and coral thrown in).

I really like how it turned out, and I hope above hopes that Katie and baby are able to get lots of time snuggling in this quilt.

Katie - thanks so much for trusting me to make something so special. I hope you are happy with how it turned out!

What do you think?

(While I'm not planning to quit my job and go into business, I am open to making a quilt for others on commission. Email me at newlywoodwards at gmail dot com if you are interested.)

Dare to ... entertain! (Week 2/6 link-up)

>> Sunday, November 20, 2011

Welcome back to the second week of Dare to DIY - and this week it's all about entertaining and setting our tables.

Dare to… entertain!
Show us your table! Even if you are not hosting Thanksgiving, take this opportunity to make your table look great. Bring out your dishes and napkins and set your table. I promise you that it will make you smile every time you walk by. Get creative and use new things. Or go true DIY and make something totally new.

So, first, here's what I came up with ...

An untraditional holiday table...

Because I wanted to coordinate the holiday decorations with our dining room decor, I think I'm going to use silver, yellow/gold and turquoise for Christmas. And since we'll be out of town for Thanksgiving, I thought now would be a good time to test the color scheme. I think I love it.

For my DIY aspect, I rolled the votives and taper candles in epsom salt to give them a snow-kissed look. (Easiest project ever.) They really turned out pretty - perfect for winter.

I had pretty much everything on-hand. I did buy the teal Christmas ornaments and the silver scarf, which I'm using as a runner. (And which I plan to wear as well.)

The plates I purchased last April from Crate & Barrel are finally put to use. I added a teal ribbon and a silver charger.

While not at all Christmas-like indivdually, it still feels very festive when placed together.

I placed the mirror I painted a few weeks ago in the center of the table and added a bunch of silver pinecones and ornaments around the candles.

So the Woodward household has officially transitioned from fall to winter... at least at the dining room table.

Now, to the good part...

Old cast iron skillets

>> Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Okay, this may be one of the most random things I've ever written a post about. (And I've written about some random things in three years.)

The subject: Cast iron

My husband has recently become obsessed with old cast iron skillets. He found one in an antique store. Then, his grandmother gave him two more of hers.

(I am still uncertain why someone needs three cast iron skillets. But we're rolling with it.)

(He does like to cook eggs. That may be the reason.)

It is kind of neat to have some variety in our cookware. And since my husband loves them, I love them. And as it turns out, cast iron cookware should last forever. What's not to love?

So, if you find yourself with some old cast iron cookware, here's some things you may need to know.

Initial cleaning
If you have an old skillet and wish to clean it before using it, it's like magic. Stick the skillet in the oven and run on self-clean. When it's done, all the "gunk" will be ash. Wipe clean with paper towels.

Seasoning
After clean, simply rub vegetable oil on the skillet and bake at 350 degrees for an hour. This seasoning creates a nonstick coating and a lovely, black patina over time. This will only get better with time.

Everyday cleaning
After using the skillet, simply wash with hot water and a mild abrasive (like coarse salt) right away to clean. Don't use soap or put in the dishwasher. Dry thoroughly to prevent rust and re-season, as needed.

Here's how our cast iron pan looked after running through the oven's self-cleaning function.

And like new after coating with vegetable oil.

Amazing, right?

What do you think of cast iron?

Okay, now onto next week's inspiration.

Dare to ... entertain!
Show us your table. This could be for Thanksgiving, everyday, the holidays or something else entirely. Bring out your table settings, display it in a new way or make something completely new (a table runner, centerpiece, etc.). I promise that having a set table will make you smile. And, everyone can use a smile.

I'm sure this will be a simple for all you DIYers. But, here are a few ideas from last year. Don't limit yourself. If you aren't hosting Thanksgiving and want to do something different, go for it!

Here are a few select favorites from the last two years' Dare to DIY party.

Jen at Home in the Country and her nature-inspired place cards.

Shannon at Shannanigans and her handmade place settings.

Jenny at Words on Wendhurst and her apple thanksgiving centerpiece.

Erin at Domestic Adventures and her natural table elements.

Joi at Nuestra Vida Dulce and her pinecone place cards.

Robin at Happy at Home and her frilly napkins and turkey placecards.

Are you feeling inspired?

The link-up will be open on Sunday night and Monday. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Dare to ... be thankful! (Week 1/6 link-up)

>> Sunday, November 13, 2011

Welcome to the first Dare to Do it Yourself Blog Party! Did you dare?

Dare to... be thankful!

Take some time making your own DIY Thanksgiving project. It could be a fun Thanksgiving advent calendar, homemade thank-you cards, a banner or something completely unique to share what you are thankful for.

First, what I came up with...

I'm thankful for ... gathering.
This year, I wanted to make something versatile for my Dare to ... be thankful! project. Why? Because since we'll be out of town for Thanksgiving, I wanted something I could use beyond the November.

But what am I most thankful for during this holiday is spending time with family. And I was inspired by Layla's fall mantel from last year - particularly the word "gather."

I thought it would be a perfect sentiment for our dining room, where we gather all year. So, I simply picked up paper mache letters at Joann's and had a little quality time with the spray paint.

This is just the time to remind you that Dare to DIY can be super simple and inexpensive!

A little bit of time later and I had my own version.

They are simpler than Layla's, but I like the simple lines with our board and batten and against the dark walls in the dining room. And I actually think these could make an appearance throughout the year.

An unexpected second project was the board on which I painted the letters. After painting, I had this fun gather sentiment on this old barn board.

Perfect for the porch. (Let's just ignore the candy corn and ghost.)

So, that was my 2-for-1 thankfulness project. Reminding me of what I'm most thankful for at this time of year.

Now, onto the fun part!
