Takin' this show on the road

>> Monday, January 31, 2011

Last weekend we took the Ryan and Kim show on the road to Chicagoland. We got home on Sunday night, at which time I promptly unpacked the suitcases and baked a batch of brownies.

That's normal.

We were in Chicagoland to see these folks.

Remember how I mentioned that Ryan's brother and sister-in-law are having a baby? (We call the baby Ron Santo.) Well, Ryan and I made the trip to lend our four hands with some last-minute baby details - painting, finishing some renovation details...

The nursery has been repainted and looks really nice. I showed off my mad cutting-in-the-ceiling skillz. It's a highly sought-after talent.

I can't wait to see it all put together with the Seuss decor that my sister-in-law picked out.

Ryan and his brother installed a closet organization system, brought the crib upstairs, put in some woodwork and outlets, and other miscellany.

We also snuggled our furnieces...

And we squeezed in trips to IKEAPottery Barn, The Tile Shop and Home Decorators Collection... oh yeah, and Chipotle and P.F. Chang's.

Can you believe that I live without all of these places?

Me neither, friends.

Three things that caught my eye in the meccas...
I want this entire bathroom (via The Tile Shop)

and this rug (via Home Decorators Collection)

and these deep bathroom sinks (via IKEA)

And speaking of beautiful bathrooms, I love my sister-and-brother-in-law's guest bathroom. I want this exact color somewhere in our house. It's lovely.

I even shot the lid so I wouldn't forget it.

So that was our little weekend jaunt.

The NewlyWoodwards will work for IKEA... and Chipotle burritos.

Can't wait for Ron (or Ronita) Santo to get here. I'm pretty sure he/she will love Pottery Barn... and the favorite aunt and uncle. (Hint: That would be Ryan and I.)

How was your weekend?

Coming clean

>> Friday, January 28, 2011

It's the last week of Jenny at Words on Wendhurst's 111 Things in 1/11. All good things must come to an end. If I kept this up, we'd be living in a cardboard box with nothing but a change of clothes and a laptop.

When Jenny asked me to join in December, I have to admit that I wondered whether I could find 111 things to get rid of in one month. Boy! 111 was the tip of the iceberg!

For the last week, I combed through my drawers and closet. I actually purged in the fall, so I didn't have a ton of things. But, it was definitely more than expected.

The socks and undergarments went into the trash. The clothes and purse went to Goodwill.

I also purged some jewelry. All the jewelry went to Arizona Lainey. I got rid of the few things I know I haven't worn, even if I like it. It's crazy to keep things I don't wear.

Here's what's left. Just getting rid of a few makes it look so much neater.

I also went through my bathroom 'stuff' and threw away everything that was old or unused by me.

More than I expected.

So, after this, I ended up purging:
2 old hairsprays
1 old shampoo
1 volume spray
14 makeup items/cleansers/eye creams that were out-of-date
2 makeup bags
1 bag of bobby pins
7 hair clips
16 various undergarments
2 blazers
1 sweater
1 eye cream
1 jewelry box
2 pairs of earrings
13 necklaces
(64 items purged this week)

Overall, I purged 184 items in January. Wow!

It's most sad that there's lots more that still needs to be purged.

What did you purge this month?

Renovation progress report - week 25

>> Thursday, January 27, 2011

I'm super excited to be guest blogging at Remodelaholic today about our bathroom remodel (from way back in the stone age - or 2007). Talking about making it big! Remodelaholic is such an awesome blog, and I've found many like-minded bloggers through the blog.

Many of you may not have seen this full before and after of our bathroom. Please go check it out and leave a comment. And, if you are dropping over from Remodelaholic, welcome! If you are interested in our remodeling adventures, please check out our entire first remodel or the weekly posts about our second home remodel.

Speaking of weekly progress - it's week 25, friends.

The bath
We're officially moving on to bathroom progress. Ryan's dad came over to lend his expertise in plumbing. It's time to get the tub hooked up! Yay!

There's also a floor, which is cool!

It's nice to avoid walking through the ceiling. (Which Ryan totally did in our current bathroom - walked straight into the recently remodeled first floor bathroom. That was a good day. If only we had a blog at that time. Lots of great stories.) Anyhow, back to the bathroom.

Remember in August when I said that the bathroom would be our first completed project? Mwahahaha.... yeah, me neither.

Well, here's a revised rough look at what we're planning for the bathroom now.

Most is the same - we'll have a simple vanity (although I think I've settled on painting it black now) subway tile in the shower and beadboard around the room. We already have the chrome light and faucet fixtures. The wood floors are getting swapped for hexagon tiles to play off the tile in the entry. I also decided to go with a medicine cabinet instead of the oval mirror. I think it looks like it could live in a house from the late 19th century.

Pretty, right?

Still a ways away, but the dream is alive.

The paint
Another room bites the dust.

I painted with Martha Stewart Bedford Gray (color matched to Behr). It's the same as the entry. Consider for a moment about how much cutting in I had to do in the HUGE room... A lot. (I don't bother with painters tape.) But, it was worth it. Really cleans up the room. And I'm still madly in love with this color.

Better than this, right?

Progress.

Lots more work
For those of you renovating, do you ever think you are just moving so fast? Then you take a step back, look around and realize that OH MY GOSH, THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO DO, HOW WILL IT EVER GET DONE?

That's where we're at. Things are happening, and it's exciting. But then I look up and see the crown moulding.
I like to paint trim and crown moulding last. I'm waiting until the windows are installed to start working on trim. And, obviously, the trim will need lots of prep before I can even paint them.

And, do you even know how many holes are in the woodwork?

About a half a million.

And these are just the small things. So, instead of crying in the fetal position, we just celebrate the small victories.

FLOOR!

PAINT!

And, what's your opinion on the fireplace? I was planning to paint it white, but I'm kinda warming up to the brick color with the wall color.

Thoughts?

Here's the updated house list.

Disappointing

>> Monday, January 24, 2011

I guess I really shouldn't be surprised. When you are a Bears fan, you must realize that disappointment is always right around the corner. (Sad, but true.)

(2007)

The fact that the Bears were 'this close' to the Superbowl.
The fact that the loss was to the Packers.
The fact that our quarterback always mysteriously gets hurt when the stakes are high and he's playing his worst.
The fact that Ryan had to see it all in person in the blistering cold.
Disappointing.

But, I guess it doesn't take away the fact that the Bears made it this far. Right?

And, Franco, Lola and I did all we could. We gave it a valiant effort with our Bears attire and attention to the game. I gave a lot of very good advice when someone was playing poorly (**cough, cough, Cutler**). If only the players would listen to the couch coach here in central Illinois.

Here's a shot of the three of us. (We were still hopeful for a win at this point.)

The dogs were happy to be in Bears attire, too. They love the Bears.

Then, it took a turn for the worse.

"Why, mom?" Lola says. "Why must the Bears destroy all our hopes and dreams?"

Try explaining this to Lola. She doesn't understand.

There's always next year. Right Bear's fans?

Who is your pick for the big game?

Operation: junk drawer

>> Friday, January 21, 2011

Woodward news alert: Ryan and I are anxiously awaiting a Bears win on Sunday. Super Bowl? Yes, please. Ryan's lucky enough to see the game in person at Soldier Field (along with last weekend's Bears playoff game). I'm moderately jealous. Okay, I'm really jealous. But, I just wanted you to know that having our team get this far is super exciting. Bear down, friends! Bear down!

In other news, it's time for week three of Jenny at Words on Wendhurt's 111 things in 1/11. If you were around last week, you know that I met my goal of 111 items last week.

This week, I didn't have a lot of down time, so I only tackled on drawer. But, it was the infamous JUNK DRAWER.

You probably have a home where everything goes in its place. A junk drawer is a foreign concept. At the Woodwards, it's where all the crap goes when I don't want it on the counter.  3 rolls of tape. 6 Sharpies. Breath mints. 4 calculators...
So, this is what happens when everything you don't want to deal with goes in one drawer. Chaos.

But, after approximately 8 minutes, I had this...
Now only things that actually belong in the miscellaneous drawer are there. No more junk. I just trashed or redirected all of the other items. And I ended up with a few things to donate.
1 roll of polka dot ribbon
1 pack of hooks
1 pocket calendar
5 suction hooks

for a total of 8 items this week.

Did you purge anything this week?

Go check out more purgers at Words on Wendhurst.

Renovation progress report - week 24

>> Thursday, January 20, 2011

Time is flying, but all is well on the renovation front. I love that we are at the point of painting rooms. More instant gratification than, say, plumbing and electrical.

Paint and skim coating
In case you were wondering, the front bedroom color is growing on me.  It looks better in daylight and I think adding white trim and our white furniture (from the extra bedroom) will really brighten it up.

Refinishing the flooring could help, too.

Ryan's been furiously working on walls to finish the skim coating in the living room and dining room. This is a terrible job, in case you were considering taking it on. It's physically draining, time-consuming, mentally mind-numbing and also incredibly messy. He seems to always be covered in a layer of dust nowadays. He sweeps up so much dust every night - it's crazy. Then, he begins again the next day.

But the result seems to really be worth the effort. The walls are smooth like buttah. Like a baby's badonkadonk. So much better than the original plaster texture. It almost looks like brand new drywall. I'm wishing we would have thought to try it at our current house. But, we didn't. Moving on.

And seeing the white almost makes me want to paint everything white to brighten it up. Holy. Moly. Look at all that natural light. But I won't. Color is in my DNA.

Speaking of color... do you see the color peeking through from the entryway?

Below is what the entry looked like after skim coating and sanding a few times. (There's the husband, laughing while I'm saying, "If you don't smile, I'll put you on the blog looking grumpy." Nothing like a light-hearted threat to make someone do exactly what you want. Story of my life.)

Oh. And hello there, Martha Stewart Bedford Gray. I'm madly in love and borderline obsessed with you. (The color is truest at the bottom of the wall.)

Let's see another before and after, shall we? (See all that dust? From one sanding.)

Oh, dear God. I just died of happiness. Love.this.color. Paint every room in your house this color and then send me a cake to thank me. It's that good.

You may recall that last week, I was debating the color. You all came through with lots of advice - some said paint it Bedford Gray. Some gave me other awesome choices for greiges. My awesome friend Christi sent me a list of blog posts with greige options and I checked out every one. I ended up with an entire list of paint colors that you love, which I organized by brand and wrote in a notepad. Then, I Googled each one to see images and checked out my favorite 10 in person. I have an obsessive personality. This shouldn't be news.

After all of that. I went with Bedford Gray anyhow. Ryan predicted it. But I love you all for your help.

Since we're talking about paint... I also confirmed our dining room color. Martha Stewart Seal (color matched to Behr Ultra Premium Plus, of course).

It's the color below the chair rail. Which will eventually be re-done to its original board and batten glory. (Can you see where the boards used to be? Who in their right mind would take out original board and batten?) Since that will be white, I decided to go with something dark and moody. This dark charcoal-with-a-hint-of-brown fit the bill. (Speaking of a moody-in-a-good-way dining room, check out this navy beauty at Ten June.)

ReStore finds
This week, we also scouted out Habitat ReStore on Saturday in search of a sink and instead found these awesome cabinet doors. Solid wood. Perfect size for our soon-to-be-built-in shelves. And the price? $15 for both sets. Sold.

I was planning to buy custom-sized wooden doors online, but $15 for 4 solid doors sounded better. And I really like them

We also scored a trim piece that is an identical match to the top trim on all the doors in the house. Which is perfect since the past owners ripped out the trim above the dining room - kitchen pass-through.

Other random scenes
I thought you may like to see some other snapshots of the house. There is stuff everywhere. The tub is still on the upstairs landing. A friend is taking it, but for now it's holding trim and other random junk.

The linen closet has turned into a very handy paint storage area. (Who needs towels when you have Rustoleum? And we don't have a working shower, sink or toilet, anyhow.)

Oh lookie... there's the new tub. In the master bedroom. Right where it belongs.

So that's the scoop at the house-ola. The list is updated, too. Check it out.

What do you think?
