Well… even though we’re still a few weeks out from frost-free date in Illinois (May 10-15 is frost-free), we began out cold weather crops this weekend.
So, I guess it’s time to tell you about our plan for the garden. I know you have been losing sleep. We went from two garden beds (4×5 feet each) in 2009 to 3 beds plus more space for 2010.
And, here’s the plan for these three beds. If you recall, I use the “Square Foot Gardening” method, so each plant will have a square foot. I’m doing one entire bed with a variety of tomatoes, because I’d like to preserve them this year.
So, that’s the garden, in photos. So far, we’ve only planted radishes, potatoes and onions outside. We also put a variety of lettuce and mustard greens in the planters on the deck.
Here’s Ryan planting all the onions. There’s like a thousand (not really – but, there will be a lot). Hopefully the neighbors like onions. Ryan chose to plant them in rows instead of in square feet.

I am so jealous of all your space! Our strawberries are going crazy as well and it makes me so happy to see all of the flowers.
So on that long lost sister note, we also amended all the soil in the garden this weekend and planted some things….like onions. I swear if we were neighbors we would have an amazing time between our painted pots and our impatience to get going on gardening!
Can’t wait to see the second edition!
Wow, we will be lucky to have a few herbs and some peppers.
I’m so impressed! I thought I was doing good with 8 different types of plants, but you really put a lot of thought into this. Are strawberries worth it? I always heard the berries are small and bitter.
Oh, I love these posts!! 🙂 The tomatoes I canned (as spaghetti sauce) turned out really well. Do you have to do anything special with your strawberry plants in the winter?
Tom prefers rows – so that’s what we’re doing. Keep up the garden posts, I’m following along!
And look at the tulips in the background! Looks like we’ll be havin’ some yummy salads at the Woodwards home this summmer. My mouth is watering alreayd. Great job Kim!
