Keep it growin'

>> Tuesday, September 29, 2009

The garden's still truckin' along (and by truckin', I mean that the vines are taking over the yard. I love it.)

The lettuce is looking amazing. It loves its window box home.

The radishes have been delicious.

The eggplant is growing like weed (I've picked more than 25 eggplant so far.)

And, I've counted more than 20 pumpkins.

I'll be a little sad when our little garden is gone for the winter.

How is your garden growing?

Piece of Honest Scrap

Thanks to both Robin at Happy at Home and Carrie at Brick City Love for awarding me the Honest Scrap Award. I've been called a lot of things... and I know it can definitely get worse. Thanks.

(And, you should all go check out those blogs. They clearly have good taste.)

Here are the rules:

1.) Say thanks and give a link to the presenter of the award.

2.) Share "10 Honest Things" about myself.

3.) Present this award to 7 others whose blogs I find brilliant in content and/or design, or those who have encouraged me.

4.) Tell those 7 people they've been awarded HONEST SCRAP and inform them of these guidelines in receiving.

Ten Honest Things
1. I have 100 Babysitter's Club books in basement that I cannot bear to part with.
2. My favorite movies include Sister Act and the Mighty Ducks.
3. When I work out to "The 30-Day Shred" with Jillian, I totally yell at her and call her names.
4. I had to wear an eye patch for a week in the 7th grade because I burnt my eyeball with a curling iron. Mortifying.
5. I typically sing harmony to songs in the car. I don't really know why and it's not really conscious. It annoys me when songs on the radio don't have background harmonies so I feel the need to fill in. I'm strange.
6. Ryan and I began dating when I was 17. Ryan was 18.
7. In college, I often caused the smoke alarms to go off. (And my roommates took photos to prove it.)
8. I often ask Ryan if can get a cat.
9. I rarely make the bed.
10. At the first Bear's game we went to, Ryan had to explain why the yellow lines didn't show up on the field to help me see the first down indicator.

I have a serious blog addiction and couldn't possible narrow it down. So, I'm not going to. (I'm a hard-core rule breaker.) I'm tagging you all.

Tell me something interesting and honest about yourself, you pieces of "honest scrap."

Hmpf... A Blogger's Story

>> Monday, September 28, 2009

I get some interesting emails and comments about our blog, particularly in-real-life friends (as opposed to you imaginary-friends out there, who just "get me").

People ask how I have time to blog. How I have time to craft. How I have time to garden. How I have time to cook (every once and a while). They like the blog, don't get me wrong (and how could they not?), but they don't understand.

I'll tell you how I have time to blog: I don't sleep.

Just kidding. I totally sleep at least 9 hours a night. I have a disorder... it's called lazy-woman-who-needs-9-hours-of-sleep-to-be-pleasant-itis.

Actually, I choose to make the time. (And, did I mention that I don't have kids?) And, I avoid doing things like working out or watching reality television or leaving the house. Or showering.

Just kidding. I shower. Sometimes.

And, actually, I think the interesting thing about the blog world is that you get a very biased view of peoples' lives.

Don't get me wrong, I love blogging. I find it to be a great motivator, a great creative outlet and a great way to be inspired by others. But, I really only post the good things (with a few exceptions). And, I have to believe that others do the same.

Who wants to post about the negative parts of life?

There are disasters and disappointments and days where I do nothing but veg on the couch. There are days when it takes an entire afternoon to hang a light fixture (hypothetically).  Or when it takes sixteen coats of white paint to cover graffiti on an upstairs door that I didn't want to sand or prime (hypothetically). Or an evening when Ryan and I spend an hour putting a cutesy cover on my camera strap.

So, I thought I'd just put that out there. This blog - it's all a mirage of a peaceful, productive household. I also want to show you these pictures. Because they are funny.

It really did take Ryan and I an hour to put a strap cover on my fancy new camera (I chose this one btw... so far, I love it).

When we finally got it on (after using a hanger, a skewer, a chopstick and wire), Ryan looked at me and said, you will never buy one of these again.
And, I smiled and said, of course not. I think I can make another one myself.

(PS - Several have asked about the lovely strap. It's by KnittyBitties. Nothing but positive experience with this Etsy seller.... speedy service, good price, great product and well-made. It was definitely just user error getting that strap cover on. Now that it's on, it's nice and cheerful.)

Fall's in da house

>> Sunday, September 27, 2009

I showed you a few fall photos here. But, I haven't shared since I put everything else up.

The hutches got fall-ified (and I made a banner like I posted about here).

And the table...

And the windows...

And the living room...

And, the kitchen, of course.

(These were my first-ever decorations. My grandma sent them to me at college in a care package during my freshman year. Since she passed away when I was a junior, these are extra special to me. They get a prime spot in the kitchen.)I've spent next-to-nothing this year on fall decorations - which is unlike me. I've only picked up some candy corn and a few garage sale finds. Ryan wonder if I'm feeling okay.

It's really nothing fancy, but I'm happy with our fall home.

Happy Fall!

High-Five Fall DIYs

>> Friday, September 25, 2009

The top five things I'd like to create this season (so far)...

These are my HIGH-FIVE
(We would like you to say "high-five" like Borat. And if you tell Ryan and I that you don't like Borat, we will cover our ears and start singing "lalalalala.")

What else should I add to my list?

DIY elevated doggie bowls

>> Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Ryan and I have been talking about building something to raise the doggie bowls in the kitchen for a while.

The dogs get water EVERYWHERE when they drink, and we hoped that having the bowl raised would help. We also find that the bowls get scattered around everywhere and this would keep them in one place.

Ryan had looked online for inspiration, and then he went at it. It took hardly any time at all - and he had this. (I'm a lucky girl.)
Then, I brushed on a few coats of white paint and Ryan added holes for the bowls.
Franco and Lola seem to like it, and I love that it looks much neater. Plus, it seems that less water gets slobbered throughout the kitchen.
It's a similar (almost exact) replica to the bench Ryan built for the front porch. And, since similar elevated bowls are selling for $50-$150 on Etsy and other online sources, I'm thrilled.

What do you think?

DIY wreath revamp

Wreaths are not my thing. I always try to make them and they always turn out looking.... how shall I say?.... blah. terrible. boring. cluttered. You name it.

However, I was re-inspired when I saw Mandy's wreath.
I had found a few gorgeous wreaths at specialty stores, but I couldn't justify spending $50-$70 on a wreath that will only be up for a few months.

However.... by using a grapevine wreath I already own, I could perk it up for fall and then change it up for winter.... the gussy it up for spring... you get the picture.

So, I went to Michael's, bought $8 in leaf garland, cattails and faux fall flowers.

And, about 15 minutes later, I had this new beauty:
I think I like it better than the $70 wreath... cause I made it.

Fall Surprise

>> Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Well, the house is finally clean. The boxes of fall decoration finally made it upstairs. I was starting to get excited and then my mom took it to the next level.

Do you spot it?

She made me this beautiful arrangement for fall and attached it to this fence. It was like this fence was made for me.
Do you love it? I do... I had to put it immediately on the wall. And, it goes with my rug and curtains perfectly. Like it was made for our little dining room. And, the chipped paint and raffia.... love. Mom said she had to pick it up when she saw the color. She knew...

Plus - she got me this fun-as-can-be punkin. It's called a "one-too-many"... whatever that means. I don't think you can have one-too-many of these bad boys.
I was just tickled to death. All of my other fall decor pales in comparison. Thanks, mom. I love it.

Have you started putting up fall decor?

Extra! Extra!

Our local newspaper ran an wrap-up article about our garden on Sunday. I didn't end up sounding like a complete idiot, so I consider it a success.

Check it out here.

And, in case you cannot get enough Kim, here's the first article that ran about our garden (blogged here).

Kinda random and fun.

Customer Service in the Internet Age

>> Friday, September 18, 2009

I know you all have had good and bad customer service experiences. So have we.

In years past - even a few years ago - we would call customer service, wait (forEVER) until we got ahold of a representative and then cross our fingers that we could get something worked out.

The Internet changes everything, doesn't it?

At NewlyWoodwards, we've had several unusual experiences involving customer service and the Internet so I thought I should share them on the blog. Both are prime examples of how customer service SHOULD work. And, social media and the Internet make it happen.

Best Buy
The first example happened a few months ago. My cheap-o camera, which was six months into a one-year warranty from the manufacturer, broke. (I should note that this was actually a replacement from the last $100 camera - somehow I didn't get the hint the first time.) The screen on the back stopped working and since there was no viewfinder, I was totally out of luck. I took it into Best Buy, with my receipt and paperwork, and was told that they wouldn't replace it.

I was mad. So, I tweeted this.

Kim_caltrain_normalCamera screen destroyed with no viewfinder. Will Best Buy will do anything for me since it's only been 6 months? (Not holding my breath.)
Now, my disclaimer: I'm no Twitter all-star. I have something like 84 followers (and I'm fairly certain 80 of those are spammers). I do feed my Twitter updates into my Facebook, but I cannot imagine that many read it. I really didn't even consider that I'd get a reaction. I guess I should have thought about that, but I didn't. I was actually planning to go back to the store the next day and try again (good things come to those who wait keep bugging the people until they break down and give me a new camera).

So, I was actually bemused when I received three replies from Best Buy folks... within an hour.

And, within 24 hours, my camera was replaced. Whoa!

Did you hear that?

Replaced. Coral with Best Buy found me on Twitter, tweeted me, called me, got my info, called the local store and got it replaced. No questions asked. Now, you may say - Kim, this should have happened from the get-go. And, it should have. But, I'm just thrilled that someone got it taken care of. That someone was listening.

Now, this was a $100 camera. It was junk. I was already considering getting a new camera, I just didn't know what yet. So, I replaced my camera with another $100 model until I could decide.

And, when I did buy a new camera less than 2 months later - guess where I bought it?

You guessed it - Best Buy.

So, do you think that Twitter had something to do with it? You betcha. And, I can guarantee you that I spent more than $100.

Overstock.com
This story is a little different, but it's an online store so I thought I'd share. Ryan got me this sewing machine for my birthday in April. I didn't even use it until last month and when I started using it, it kept having problems. I had to buy new bobbin cases (at $29.95 a pop) after an hour of sewing with it. I was annoyed.

When I had to go to the local sewing shop (twice), the tech told me that the machine was known to have some problems. So, I talked with Ryan about it and we decided to try to call Overstock and see what they would do. Honestly, we didn't think they could do anything for us because it had been several months.

So, I contacted Overstock. I could have done it online but I called instead. I waited on the line for less than 30 seconds before getting a voice (which is a miracle in itself). Then, I was told that it was okay that it was after 30 days (which was stated on the receipt). My husband had bought the protection plan for $9.99. (YAY!) So, I sent in all the paperwork and the explanation of the problem. And, within a week, I received a refund.

(And on a related note, since the item was oversized, I didn't even have to pay to send in the machine. I still have the sewing machine. What do I do with a half-working machine? I guess keep it as backup?)

Overstock is totally on my good list. And, while I decided to get the sewing machine locally so I can rely on the expertise of the locally-owned shop, I will definitely be shopping at Overstock.com again. (I'm actually on their right now.... browsing all the beauties in the home decor area.)

So, these are two of my recent customer service stories. Both of these are nothing extraordinary, I suppose. However, I think we are often quick to complain, so I also wanted to put my happy service stories out there.

I'm wondering if the economy has anything to do with the recent great service I've received? Because, let's be honest, generally I've noticed that service really stinks (and I think that brick-and-mortar stores still have a ways to go). Do you think companies genuinely trying to keep their customers happy because sales are down?

What do you think? Do you have any good (or bad) customer service stories?
