Tourist in my own town

There are so many things to do in my area, but we never manage to do most of it.
This weekend gave me the opportunity to see some new things, re-visit some old, and just have a good time being a tourist in my own town.
The key to being a tourist in your own town is to get out your camera. Who says you can't take tons of pictures if you don't leave your area? So, I decided that I would take pictures all weekend.
Ali - my college roommate, sorority sister and bridesmaid - came to visit. I wanted to make sure we stayed busy and that she got to see lots of the area.
Meet Ali, so happy to be at the Woodwards after 6 hours in a car.

The first night, we went downtown to a dueling piano bar. We also went up in the skywalk downtown to enjoythe colors and the fun view of the downtown area and the Mississippi River.

Then we met another sister, Emily, for a stroll through the new exhibits at the art museum.
It was such a hot day, so we had to cool off with these...
Then, it was time to see the John Deere Commons. Since we live in the same town as the corporate headquarters of John Deere and Ryan happens to work for JD, we had to check out the pavilion. It's incredibly fun for both young and old - and it's free.

Then, we boarded the Channel Cat water taxi, which toddled us out on the great Mississippi River. How did I never take a water taxi ride before?
We hopped off at the Village of East Davenport stop (hopped, literally).
We stopped for the best homemade hot fudge in the world at Lagomarcinos. I swear... it really is the best.

Then, we made dinner at home.
That night, we went to the $5 theatre to see a late movie with buttery popcorn and a fountain Coke! Ali had to go home this morning. I tried to lock her in the guest bedroom, but she escaped. I hope she gets to visit again soon. But, until then - I plan to be a tourist again soon. It's great fun! (Who wants to visit me next?)
Have you ever been a tourist in your own town? What's your favorite thing to do in your area?

5 people have something to say:
Sounds like a lot of fun. To be honest, there is not a lot to do in our area. However, we are only about a hour from Pittsburgh, which is packed with stuff to do. :)
Sounds like fun!!! I love girlfriend time. I have talked about venturing out in our own area to discover it...I should.
What a fun and busy weekend. Since I live in DC there is a ton of stuff to-do. But we don't have time to do most of it or we just do the same things over and over again. Glad you had a nice time with your friend!
I LOVE the cheap movie theater!
The thing that I forget sometimes is that I live in an amazing epicenter of natural beauty, and I don't venture out of the house enough on weekends to appreciate it--heck, people come from all over the WORLD to see Crater Lake...it's just a hop, skip, and a jump from where I live, and I don't visit nearly enough!
My family's been visiting in several batches this summer, and I've been realizing all the fun things to do in town that I've never done before or don't do very often. Yay for being a home-town tourist!
